Critically discuss some of the ways in which a range of children’s services can be shaped by the participation of children. What is the role of the practitioner in enabling participation?
For TMA 02, it will be important for you to demonstrate that you understand the meaning of participation. The main discussion of participation is in Chapter 5 of Connecting with Children. The active involvement of children in decision making is discussed in previous chapters and this material can also be drawn on, where relevant.
Your TMA answers should seek to integrate your study from earlier in the module. A critical discussion should also consider some potential limitations to, or tensions within, children’s ability to shape services. Chapter 5 provides examples of the ways in which the involvement of children can be conceptualised and used as measures of participation. The nature and challenges of participation may vary between settings, and the question requires you to respond to this ‘range’ in your answer.
Your discussion about the role of the practitioner can be informed by the audio-visual material in the module, and where relevant, by your personal experience.
Remember that your answer to this and other TMAs should aim to include, where possible, the views and perspectives of children, and reflect an understanding of the diversity of children, taking into account, for example, issues of gender, class, ethnicity and disability.
